Career Prospects

As a member of the Russell Group, the University of Birmingham is known for a quantitative finance PhD programme that combines academic rigour with close industry links. Graduates are valued by leading organisations for their strong mathematical modelling, programming and independent research abilities.

Starting salaries are generally higher than in other finance roles. In financial centres such as London, new PhD graduates typically earn between GBP 70,000 and GBP 120,000, while experienced professionals may earn several hundred thousand GBP s a year. Graduates mainly pursue careers in the following areas:

  • Academia and regulatory bodies: Some graduates continue in university research and teaching.

Others join central banks or financial regulators, working on financial stability, policy modelling and systemic-risk monitoring. Graduates also enter investment banks and proprietary-trading firms, working in quantitative analysis, derivatives pricing or risk management, or join proprietary-trading firms and hedge funds to conduct high-frequency trading, algorithmic-strategy development and systematic investment research.

  • Financial technology and major technology companies: Graduates develop core algorithms such as credit models and risk-pricing engines at fast-growing fintech companies. Financial divisions within large technology companies also offer a broad platform.

  • Asset management: Graduates serve buy-side institutions, using factor models and alternative-data analysis to build and back-test innovative investment strategies and create investment value.
