Research Focus

The Ph.D. in Biosciences and Biomedicine Engineering project focuses on key directions such as molecular and cellular mechanisms of life systems, biomaterial and tissue engineering, biomechanical and medical imaging, precision medicine and disease intervention, neuroscience and brain health engineering, and biomedical data science. The project emphasizes in-depth exploration of the principles and applications of biological process patterns, major disease mechanisms and intelligent diagnostic techniques, using an interdisciplinary approach combining experimental biology, engineering, artificial intelligence and computational modelling. The research focuses on AI-driven disease prediction and individualized treatment, smart medical image analysis, cytological behaviour and tissue regeneration simulation, optimization of biological materials and interfaces, advanced sensory and detection systems, and health data modelling and decision-making support, and works to promote full-chain innovation from basic scientific discovery to the transformation of smart medical technologies. The project focuses on multidisciplinary cross-cutting, providing systematic scientific support for biomedical technology development, the construction of smart health systems and future innovations in precision medical models by integrating life sciences, engineering sciences, information science and artificial intelligence technologies.

Programme Structure and Funding

The project is a full-time Ph.D. project: the AFPHO project, which uses a full English-language system of teaching and training, allows instructors to use Chinese literature 3 years for daily scientific exchange and guidance (subject to a Master’s degree in relevant research) and 4 years (without having to hold a Master’s degree in related research).

Entry Requirements

Place of study: Guangzhou. Full-time doctoral studies (including scholarships) and tuition fees of RMB 40,000 per school year.

Full/part-time research doctor (self-funded) and tuition fees 150,000 yuan per school year. Full-time Ph.D. students are entitled to a tuition allowance and a living allowance for up to 4 years, which fully covers the cost of studying.

Spring enrolment, previous year12Month26End of day application. Autumn, same year7Month15End of day application.

• Academic background: Obtaining a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a track record of excellence; or providing evidence that they have reached a satisfactory level of study by at least one year of full-time or two years of part-time studies at the postgraduate level. GPA 3.0 Language Requirements: TOEFL iBT 80 IELTS (academic) total score 6.5 (single 5.5) refers only to single test results and does not accept home examination results.

The applicant is not required to offer a TOEFL or IELTS degree: the first language is English, or a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) is obtained from an institution where English is the language of instruction, or a master’s degree (or higher) is obtained from an institution where English is the language of instruction.

Application Materials

  1. A valid mainland China identity card.
  2. Academic curriculum vitae.
  3. Official report card and diploma.
  4. School scoring system (usually on the back of a report card or student manual)
  5. TOEFL/Assess (academic) report; or an official letter confirming that you have obtained a bachelor’s degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction.
  6. Research programmes and past research experience, participation or experience in research projects, research topics and programmes.

Career Prospects

Under the mentor ’ s system, Ph.D. students will gain in-depth knowledge of molecular and cytology, tissue engineering, biological materials, biomechanicals, precision medicine, neuroscience, health data science and biomedical engineering techniques, and will have comprehensive scientific capabilities across life sciences, engineering, information science and medicine. Graduates have broad development prospects in the following areas:

• Scientific research institutes and medical laboratories: basic scientific research, technological development, experimental methodology optimization and medical application research at national or international scientific institutions, medical research centres and clinical laboratories. • Biotechnology and the medical industry: new drug development, medical equipment design, health data analysis, diagnostic technology development and technology conversion in biomedical enterprises, medical equipment companies, health technology platforms or biotechnology start-ups.

• Data science and health information posts: specialized in data modelling, system optimization and decision support in biomedical data analysis, computational biology, artificial intelligence support consultations, public health analysis and bioinformation platforms. Through systematic academic training and interdisciplinary research, doctoral students will acquire a solid theoretical foundation for life sciences and biomedical engineering, experimental skills and data analysis, develop independent scientific thinking, innovative design and interdisciplinary cooperation, and lay a solid foundation for development in academic, scientific, industrial and health science and technology.
