Research Focus
Sustainable energy materials and equipment development, with special attention to new electrodes and functional materials for energy storage and conversion systems (e.g. mobile batteries, super capacitors, hydrolytics, etc.). Research includes material design, manufacturing (e.g. 3D printing, electron-fibre manufacture), structural- nature relationship analysis, and testing and optimization in actual energy installations.

Career Prospects
Driven by global energy transformation and carbon neutrality and targets, there are unprecedented development opportunities in the area of sustainable energy materials. As the leading researcher in this field, the doctoral graduates of the Faculty of Engineering and Materials Sciences of Queen Mary University in London, who possess interdisciplinary knowledge, cutting-edge research and development skills and excellent problem-solving skills, are highly competitive in the global job market.
In the United Kingdom, the annual salary of doctoral graduates is usually between 40,000 and 55,000 GBP s sterling, and may be higher in well-known enterprises or in specific high-demand areas (e.g., battery development). In countries and regions such as the United States, Switzerland or Northern Europe, pay levels are usually higher.
In terms of career choices, doctoral graduates mainly go to the following areas:
-
Academia and scientific institutions: Many graduates have chosen to enter the world ’ s top universities or institutes for postdoctoral studies, continuing their expertise in areas such as photovoltaic catalytic, battery systems or nanomaterials, with the aim of becoming independent researchers or professors. They are responsible for applying for scientific research funds, directing graduate students, and publishing papers in top-level periodicals and promoting the advancement of disciplines.
-
Industrial R & D sector: This is one of the most important flows of graduates. They are at the forefront of the new energy industry and can develop the next generation of lithium ion batteries, solid batteries and battery management systems at car companies or specialized battery companies (e.g. Ningdee era, Biadi, Northvolt).
Or to work in a solar-powered battery company (e.g., the Lungi shares) or the Hydrogen Energy Corporation, which works to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic material conversion and to develop low-cost hydrogen/hydrogen storage new materials. Companies such as Johnson Matthey can also be accessed to develop special chemical materials and devices for catalytic, energy storage or conversion.
-
Government and Public Service: Graduates have access to national laboratories, energy policy-making departments or standard certification bodies (e.g. NPL, National Physics Laboratory). They use their expertise to engage in national energy strategic planning, conduct material life-cycle assessments or establish safety and performance standards for new energy materials and equipment to contribute to sustainable energy development at the macro level.
-
Entrepreneurship and counselling: Some graduates, based on their technological innovations, start up their businesses through university technology transfer offices and transform laboratory technology into a marketable product. At the same time, the top management consulting firms (e.g. McKinsey, BCG) and the specialized intellectual property law firm are also very much in favour of such doctors, who are hired to provide high-value advisory services such as technology strategy, market analysis and patent layout to enterprises in the energy sector.
