Research Focus

The Ph.D. in Physics project at the Graduate Center of City University of New York focuses on the basic patterns of the interaction of light and matter and its application in advanced optical technologies, covering key frontier areas such as quantum optical, non-linear optical, photoware and nanooptics, super-fast optical, photomaterials and integrated phototechnologies. The project emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach combining experimental physics, precision measurements, material engineering, computational simulations and quantum theory, and explores in depth the application potential of optical field regulation mechanisms, quantum-state generation and manipulation, nanoscale optical behaviour and new photovoltaics.

The focus of the study included the transfer of quantum light sources and quantum information, super-fast lasers associated with very short pulses, nanophotostructure design and light field enhancement, PV coupling mechanisms in low-dimensional materials, integrated photo chips and high-speed photocommunications, non-light optical process regulation, optical sensory and precision measurement techniques, photo computing and optical artificial intelligence models, etc. Through a combination of theoretical modelling, numerical simulation, high-end experimental platforms and material design, the project seeks to promote full-chain innovation from basic optical research to advanced phototechnology and quantum information engineering.

The project places great emphasis on multidisciplinary cross-cutting, integrating physics, material science, engineering technology, computing science and artificial intelligence methods in depth, providing systematic scientific support for the development of future quantum technology, super-fast optical, optical communication systems, new photons and optical intelligence systems.

Programme Structure and Funding

The project is a full-time Ph.D. project: direct undergraduate studies 5 years, study place: USA. Scholarships: Students receive full funding from the Graduate Centre. Support available to students includes research assistant positions, teaching assistant positions and scholarships, funded and contracted by teachers. Autumn enrolment, application deadline 10, year 1.

Entry Requirements

Academic background: bachelor’s degree or master’s degree from an accredited institution. Special admission requirements: The average undergraduate physical and mathematical achievement score must be at level B or above and a sufficient number of relevant courses have been attended. A master’s degree in physics may be considered even if it does not meet the above requirements. GPA 3.8 / 4.0. Language requirements: TOEFL iBT or IELTS did not have specific requirements, English level will be assessed during interviews. The applicant is not required to offer a TOEFL or IELTS degree: a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree from an institution in a country where English is the only language of instruction and where English is the official language.

Application Materials

  1. Academic curriculum vitae
  2. applicant’s statement (includes past educational and work experience, academic and career planning, reasons for pursuing a post-graduate degree, choice of professional direction, other information to assess academic competence)
  3. Personal representation (academic background and life experience, restricted to 250)
  4. Official report card and degree certificate (non-English version with a certified English translation)
  5. TOEFL or IELTS performance reports (no specific requirements for achievements)
  6. 5 valid GRE accomplishment report during year (no specific requirement for accomplishment)
  7. 2 for recommendation

Career Prospects

Under the mentor ’ s system, Ph.D. students will have in-depth knowledge of optical, quantum optical, nanophotometry, photoscopes, super-fast optical and related experiments and computational techniques, as well as integrated scientific capabilities across physics, material science, engineering and data science. Graduates have broad development prospects in the following areas: Higher education and research institutions: scientific research and teaching in optical physics, quantum optical, photomaterials and devices, nanooptics and related directions, as lecturers, assistant professors or independent researchers at research universities.

• Scientific institutions and laboratories: basic research, photoscope development, laboratory optimization and applied technology research at national or international physical research centres, quantum technology laboratories, optical and material laboratories. • Optical technology and high-tech industries: new light device design, quantum technology development, optical system optimization and scientific conversion in photocommunication, laser technology, quantum information, nanophoto materials and high-tech enterprises.

• Data analysis and computational jobs: computational studies, algorithm development and system design in the areas of quantum information simulation, optical computing, optical artificial intelligence, data modelling and optical system optimization. Through systematic academic training and interdisciplinary research, Ph.D. students will acquire a solid theoretical foundation of optical and physics, experimental skills, quantum and computational modelling, develop independent scientific thinking, innovative design capabilities and interdisciplinary collaborative capabilities, and lay a solid foundation for development in the academic, scientific and phototechnic industries.
